Of cause the real problem is no-one in any position to actually do anything to make any suggested , voted on,demonstrated-for anthem official is, whilst this blog goes about it partly in fun and partly in a confusion of what is required for a real national anthem - what essential points and content is required?
Those of a certain age group only think of a national anthem/song as something for football matches, athletics and such, other older folk think of remembrance day.
'God Save The Queen' is for the United Kingdom as a whole but not specificaly for England, Only Wales has an official national anthem in the UK. We surely could not have a national anthem for England entitled 'Jerusalem', 'Land of Hope and Glory' again is for the UK or Great Britain (England,Wales,Scotland)'I Vow To Thee My Country'(the tune) was writen by a music teacher in an English school who hoped it might be considered as England's anthem. As for the Bishops ramblings he should listen to 'God Save The Queen' - all the verses!
'There'll Always Be an England' written by an American who from the lyrics had no idea of England's flag - no sir.
A Nation Anthem for our country of England should be fearlessly patriotic and make the singer feel proud , if it also has a message of hope for 'another country' then so much the better - my vote's for the Spring-Rice/Holst 'I Vow To Thee My Country'.

I rather think this would be good. it's funny in a self deprecating sort of way - which is very English, and it's actually correct too

Wandered in here after the question of the sixth verse of "God save the Queen" came up in a pub quiz last night.

I think it would be a good idea for Anthem4England to launch a campaign on Twitter. By using it we can gain a significant number of followers. We could link to petitions and other useful websites to get the message across.

Found this forum last week whilst doing a little research on the National Anthem - one of my friends has started a new cause to 'Leave the ******* National Anthem Alone!' I wasn't really aware that we didn't have an English Anthem, guess I just assumed it was 'Land of Hope and Glory' - how wrong could I be!

After having a chat with my Dad who is in his 70's, I did a little more research and found the words to a song he had learnt at school. 'The English Rose' seems to have been written between the 1st and 2nd World Wars by Welshman Ivor Novello for his musical, 'Crest of a Wave'.

http://www.btinternet.com/~brentours/ENGT08.htm

It was available on iTunes and after having listened to it I've come to the conclusion it would make a fantastic Anthem.

Have managed to find a video here:

It's the chorus that stirs some National pride...

Kate

My name is Tim , and I am a Yorkshire-based IT Consultant &

I have also written an Anthem for England! Its on You Tube and I would be interested in your views on it : it's called England (With One Voice)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ai7V8DYBI8&feature=channel_page

In fact I have just heard that I have obtained 'honorable mention' in Unisong (the international Song writing contest) with the song in the Social/Political category.

The Quote
You only need to go to an event like the Proms or an England rugby union match to see how people feel - crowds don't sing God Save The Queen.
